Today’s topic is “how to take good selfies for guys.” There is an opinion that taking selfies is an activity that is not very suitable for men. In a general sense, we subscribe to this opinion. But as with any rule, there are exceptions to this.
The front camera on your smartphone is not invented for beautiful girls only. Since it exists, there is a reason to use it. Another thing is how to do this so as not to seem like a notorious narcissist and not litter other people’s Instagram feeds. It’s effortless, to take good selfies for guys – follow the rules below.
1. Don’t Post Selfies for No Reason
By and large, a guy is allowed to take a selfie in three cases:
- If it is a collective one.
- If there is any point of interest or something that is the main object of attention in the background.
- If you’re trying on new clothes in a store and want to send a photo to someone you know for advice.
All of these cases are the reverse of the first rule: don’t post selfies for no reason. Selfies for the sake of selfies look not only meaningless but also stupid. How is it necessary to cultivate narcissism to simply layout your face in close-up? Without the Colosseum behind or without friends in an embrace, an ordinary selfie can only be allowed as an accompaniment to some thoughts or other text.
2. Don’t Post Selfies Too Often
All your subscribers, friends, girlfriends, acquaintances, and pets know perfectly well how you look. And you don’t need to remind them about it 12 times a day. Some events should motivate a person to take a selfie, and not vice versa.
Searching for an excuse to capture your face and lay it out is too obvious a thing not to be funny: “Here I am in the background of my sofa,” “Here I am in the background of the sofa again, but already on the side,” “Here I am driving a car,” “But I’m standing at a bus stop because the car is in the service.”
In short, do not look for reasons to fill your page with your selfies because an account in which there is nothing but your close-up face suggests that you have no other interests.
3. Don’t Take Selfies in The Wrong Environment
There can be many such conditions. But first of all, this applies to situations in which you are not for the sake of your photographing. We have long accepted that every second elevator in the world has become a forced selfie booth, but how the gym or the car’s interior ended up on this list is not at all clear. You do sports for yourself, not for your Instagram.
Traffic jam is a business that each of us faces on a daily basis. Your friends will not learn anything new about the state of affairs in the world if you take a picture of yourself in a car during one of these traffic jams. The same applies to selfies during an accident. There are even fewer reasons for pride here than in the above examples. And further.
According to the level of evil in the world, the male selfie in bed is right after the queue at the post offices.

4. Don’t Take Selfies in Low Light
Technical requirements apply to all photographs, but especially to selfies. Since you have decided to capture yourself in a photo, do it so that the reason does not seem far-fetched, but the image is distinguishable.
Don’t use flash, don’t overuse filters and other editing tools, and god forbid, use false ears or eyes! The naturalness of photography is valued above all else. It applies to both lighting and entourage. And in a selfie, the very format of which is contrary to all naturalness, such things are fundamental.
5. Don’t Put on A Weird Expression
In addition to the previous point about naturalness, your facial expression in a separate article is worth mentioning. Unlike other photos, there is one essential and unusual law in selfies: the more you try to show off your attractiveness, the more stupid you look.
Sticking out your tongue, making a funny grimace is all right, but moving your lips as if you were kissing someone while winking, is bad. The same goes for stories about posing without a T-shirt or showing your biceps with a bent arm. Selfie naturalness is the surest way to avoid embarrassment.

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Smile in Your Selfie
Smiling in a selfie is the most organic way to show you are not serious about this photo format. Smiling, not only increase the chance of being good at the picture but also nullify all the pretentiousness that accompanies the idea of photographing yourself.
Of course, as a guy, you sometimes want to look brutal, formidable, and courageous in the photo. Well, then it’s worth remembering that selfies are not for this occasion.
